The .coÂ country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) was actually released for as a country identifier for ColombiaÂ originally delegated by IANA to the Universidad de los Andes on December 24, 1991 but an academic noted that .com’s were running low and knowing a great deal of countries used .co to signify a company, as in .co.uk (A company based in the United Kingdom) he suggested that the domain extension be released to the rest of the world. It is now be recognized as the second highest ranking domain extension for any company world wide after .com.
